Tignes Val d’Isere Snow Report & Weather Forecast – 10.03.16

Meteo Mike Snow Reports Tignes Val d'IsereBy Meteo Mike

The sun shone all day and low down it did feel like Spring – not quite the same up Tignes’ Grand Motte though where there was a distinct chill. We started a gentlemen’s off piste day with Glattier down to the road near the last tunnel as you approach Tignes. As is most of the off piste it was tracked out but the pitches out of the sun were still fun as you can see in the photo above.

After a bit of a wait for the bus we popped back up to Tignes and worked our way down Familial to Val d’Isere’s La Daille. Out of the sun the snow was chalky and good fun. After a lunch on the terrace we headed up the Grande Motte where it was spookily quiet for a great day. The snow on the glacier between the summit and the Leisses lower station was fine, but required a lot of energy. We then opted for an easy descent via Genepy – unfortunately it was quite windblown off piste with sastrugi, a bit more tricky!.

Tomorrow will be another sunny day – there may be a bit more breeze at height and the temperatures will be similar to today. Saturday looks identical with less of a breeze perhaps. So for the 29,000 vehicles arriving and the 27,000 departing there will be no problems with the weather… there will of course still be traffic jams. It is also the last weekend for the Geneva Motorshow, so don’t leave it to the last minute if you are in a hire car. Historically, it has been a bit chaotic as the show is in the Expo Centre at the airport. Sunday looks like a day of sun and cloud with the chance of a shower of snow in the morning. Monday will be the same with less chance of a shower and then the next 3 days look like being reasonable with the chance of a giboulée (‘April Shower’ they come a bit earlier here) at any time really. But not enough to spoil the fun!
