So Tignes and Val D’Isere today: As they used to say in Thunderbirds… F.A.B! Before I relate the tale I would point out I was out with an off piste instructor from Evolution 2 Tignes and we had very careful route selection, so please don’t follow what we did unless you are very confident in your abilities. The cloud was thin this morning and there were some good breaks so we did a couple of runs down the Palafour off piste for a warm up until other lifts opened. It was then down Familial and twice round Envers Campanules (pictured). The conditions varied from powder to a thin layer of crust after yesterday’s afternoon sun – down low it was soft and a bit lumpy. In the afternoon the sky filled in a bit, there was even the odd flocon. But that didn’t stop us doing Jardin du Borsat (a bit crusty) and then we effectively opened up the North Face of the Borsat; even thought the light was failing the snow was divine. To finish, we completed Petit Chardo (no one had done the hike to the main couloir) where the snow was enough to put a smile on the face of Mr Grumpy!
After a cold night, tomorrow morning will be similar to this morning and more cloud breaks should appear through the day. But the synoptic charts are a bit wishy washy at the moment so the cloud could ebb and flow. Friday and Saturday look great, sunny skies, light winds and cool – just what we need to keep the snow in good condition. The weather will start to change on Sunday, it will start nice but the cloud will build in the afternoon, we may see a light snow shower.
