I arrived last night in Tignes and the big news is it’s very warm for the time of year. Snow was melting off the balconies so the not-such-good news is that some of the snow has disappeared. There is a meeting this afternoon to decide what will be open on Saturday, but rumours around the village say the links will be open via the Toviere gondola. How far you can get into Val D’Isere remains to be seen. Also Tichot and Grattalu seem to be on the cards. Palafour won’t open – out of my window it has very thin cover. The big problem seems to have been the heat preventing the snow cannons from running during the day so they have had to prioritise certain slopes. Certainly there will be enough pistes for everyone to have a great day (weather permitting).
But the good news is the weather is going to change by the weekend. Tomorrow and Friday will still be warm with 2 days of sunny spells but it will cool through Saturday and be more like winter on Sunday. Saturday will be unsettled and we should get around 10-15 cm of snow down to around 2000m. On Sunday there are likely to be some snow showers and the snowline will be down in Bourg so expect a bit of natural snow and the cannons to be running at full pelt. Next week looks very unsettled but it’s a bit far off for any firm predictions other than Tignes and val D’Isere will feel and look much more like ski resorts.
