Lights are going out in Tignes tonight to mark Earth Hour and show support for action on climate change.
Environmental charity WWF started the Earth Hour movement. They’re asking people across the globe to ‘go dark’ for an hour from 8.30pm tonight. The idea is that by turning out the lights in our homes, offices and towns we can all show our commitment to a sustainable eco future for our planet. A charity spokesman explains: “There’s never been a more critical moment for the world to show solidarity for and a strong commitment to fighting climate change. By going dark, local government, cities, companies, landmarks, and individuals send the message that we will remain steadfast as we deliver on the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. Will you join the movement?”
Tignes have answered that challenge with a big fat YES! Already known as the ‘greenest’ ski resort, we love the fact that Tignes is leading the way in this eco initiative too. The lights that project onto the mountains will be turned off at 8.30pm for Earth Hour, Tignes Mairie have told us.
Town council member Lucy Miller says: “This is a decision taken by the town council and the mayor. A few local bars are saying that they will be dimming their lights too. The STGM has got Green Globe status and the commune does make efforts to encourage energy reduction – with energetic renovation of coproprieties, biodégradable oils used in council vehicles, new hydroelectric project Tignenergies, new sewerage works with energy production from burning the waste produced and more.”
Tignes resident Joe Berrow has been raising awareness of the event in resort. He said: “Spread the word – switch off your TVs, your lights, your washing machines, your ovens, have a conversation, light a candle, get outside (even if cloud cover does ruin the stars), do your bit. Filter our electricity down the line from where it is a privilege to where it is a necessity.”
If you want to get together to take part in tonight’s event in Tignes, head to TC’s Bar in Tignes Le Lavachet for beautiful acoustic music by candlelight. Patron TC said: “It’s an amazing event that TC and TC’s Bar is more than happy to support. Climate change is evident and us as humans have a responsibility to act yesterday! As individuals we can only play a small part, as a collective we can literally change the world.”
Get involved and let’s show Tignes’ support for this great cause!
