A little further along the main Val D’Isere High Street, at the front of The Portillo, you will find super cosy hang out and chill zone, Rize. This bright and airy coffee bar is a breath of fresh air in a busy ski resort, not only for the sense of space both inside and on the delightful sun-trap of a terrace, but also for those who appreciate a Good Coffee made with genuine passion. In it’s 3rd Winter season the brains behind Rize still produce arguably the best coffee in resort, and over the years have added several other interesting and unique dimensions to their business.
Rize Coffee Bar was opened 2 Winter seasons ago by Scottish/Swedish/English couple Tanja and Andreas. Tanja and Andreas met in Val d’Isere 12 years ago, when Tanja already had the dream of opening a cafe in Val D’Isere. During an 8 month trip to Mammoth Lakes, USA, the pair developed a passion for coffee, and the cafe dream transformed into a coffee shop, with the aim of producing top quality coffees for people to enjoy.
Open from 8.30am to 7pm, Rize has a lot more than just great coffee on the menu. There are energising breakfast options to set you up for a day on the slopes, yummy panini’s to keep hunger at bay, sumptuous soups, homemade cakes, healthy smoothies, and so much more. All delicious and all made with love.
As well as being passionate about good coffee Tanja and Andreas are also fiercely passionate about the community of the ski resort town that has become their home. “Rize is about the people that make up the community of Val d’Isere: the locals, the season workers, all nationalities, the older and the younger. We love people, and want to create a space where people can be themselves.” She explained. “Rize is also about integrity, excellence and creativity.” And to support these beliefs they decided to create The Moving Gallery. New for Winter 2016/17 this gallery displays artwork made by local artists. Everything is available to buy, so as well as being a coffee bar, restaurant, hang out, tea room, Rize is also an art gallery now too!

Tanja and Andreas have also shown their support for the local community by incorporating a kids play zone into Rize. Local families with young children enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, and it’s this understanding of their community’s needs that makes all the difference. “I don’t know how I would have coped without this place!” One local Mum told me. “Especially when the kids were really small. It was an absolute life-saver having somewhere I could come with the baby and know that I’d be welcome. Now that they’re both a bit older they love coming here as much as I do!” “I get to relax with a great coffee and a magazine, and my daughter gets to play without me worrying that she’s upsetting other customers” another Val D’Isere mum explained. “It’s brilliant. And the coffee is excellent.”
I asked Tanja what her favourite item on the menu was. “We love the flat white coffee, the healthy smoothies or the Thai sweet potato soup.” She told me.
I decided to go for a very healthy sounding “The Popeye” and wow- it was zingy and delicious! I can whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a delicious juice or a health kick. Made with fresh ingredients right in front of you, it really is filled with nothing but goodness.
Next time you’re in Val D’Isere and looking for somewhere relaxed and inviting to grab a quick coffee or to spend a few hours sampling the various delights available, why not pop in and see Tanja and Andreas. They’ll welcome you with friendly smiles and provide you with everything your coffee craving could possible desire, and so much more…
