Tignes Val d’Isere Snow Report & Weather Forecast – 05.02.16

Meteo Mike Snow Reports Tignes Val d'IsereBy Meteo Mike

After early morning mist disappeared we had another bluebird day!. There was also a bit of snow overnight. A friend and I decided to have a major expedition down to and below the Refuge du Col du Palet.  (This is not something to be undertaken unless you know where you are going and what you are doing on skins and in the backcountry).  The pistes on the way were fabulous but not as fabulous as the untracked snow that we found – see the photo.  After a couple of pitches like this and all the uphill skinning this involved we were ready for our Savoyarde delicacies at the Refuge!

And now to the weather and travel:

Tomorrow will start sunny with a stiff breeze – but do not be lulled into going too far from home. The sky will soon cloud over and the winds will pick up very quickly and will be blowing hard by close of play. The upper lifts will be closed and, I suspect, so will the links between the 2 resorts. On Sunday it will be snowing well down the valley before most transfers set off – it will be a whiteout and blowing a gale, there is no other way to describe it. If you are arriving on Sunday in a car without snow tyres make sure you have chains before you get to Bourg.

On Monday there will be less wind and the snowline may creep up high enough to give sleet in Tignes Les Brevieres. Tuesday will be similar but the wind will be back; I expect the leisure facilities to be busy in town! Wednesday should see sunny periods but the winds will be even stronger and it will be a lot colder – head for the trees. After that it is unsettled but unpredictable so no point elaborating.

On the travel side, tomorrow in the UK there is a chance of a shower or rain across the country (I am sounding like a cracked record). In the afternoon the winds will be howling down south and there is a chance that the crosswinds will be out of limits for landing at Gatwick Airport and Heathrow – the wind will be unusually blowing from the south. Over here it is the same old story with Chambery I am afraid (cracked record 2). The forecaster suggests a 40% chance of fog patches and low cloud until mid-morning. If these happen then stand by for some hanging around in the UK until it clears – which it will. Nothing too bad at the other 3 airports although Lyon are going for very strong winds late in the afternoon which the others are not forecasting. We have had enough jokes about ferry crossings already this year – and it’s no better tomorrow. Traffic jams are inevitable on the roads from Chambery – arrive and depart very early or late is the only advice I can give.
